What Are Air Tools?

Air tools are tools that use compressed air to operate. Air compressors in the tool generate the power the tool needs to run. Air tools include nail guns and air drills. In fact, almost every electric-powered tool has an air tool equivalent including impact wrenches, grinders, screwdrivers, ratchets and hammers.

You may also occasionally hear air tools referred to as pneumatic tools. Both words can be used interchangeably to mean the exact same kind of air power tools.

Air tools are slowly becoming more popular – if they’re not already more popular – electric tools or electric-powered tools. This is because pneumatic tools are reliable, very powerful with higher torque, and therefore can be used on very heavy-duty and high-pressure jobs. They can perform this sort of work with less wear and tear on the tools. In addition, they are very safe to use.

As noted before, air tools run on compressed air so the right air compressor is needed for your tool. There are home air compressors for homeowners and jobs at home. These smaller air compressors with less horsepower can be used in impact wrenches for around-the-house jobs. There are commercial air compressors or industrial grade compressors with more horsepower for bigger commercial projects.

Some people have argued that air tools are more expensive than electric tools. They are sometimes, but not always, more expensive than their electric counterparts but their durability means they have a longer life span.
